At the beginning of November Lindley Band were proud to unveil a Blue Plaque on the wall of their band room in Lindley, to commemorate their esteemed player, conductor, president, and friend Neil Jowett. The band felt very strongly that Neil’s contribution over the 50 years plus that he was involved with Lindley, (and also other local musical organisations) deserved a permanent reminder. We thought that a blue plaque was a fitting way to do this particularly as it confirms his connections to the building as well as the organisation. You are probably aware that he built the band's current band room which now forms part of the original building.
Neil passed away in January 2021 and is greatly missed by all who knew him. He played a leading role in Lindley Band for over 50 years, firstly, as the band’s principal cornet, a position he took up just after his 17th birthday in 1967, secondly, in the 1980’s, as the band’s musical director - a position he held successfully for 30 years. Latterly Neil took up playing again with the local groups Huddersfield Wind band and Sundown Swing but remained connected and committed to Lindley as both band president and trustee, and also as conductor of the training band Tower Brass, which he established from the youngsters he taught.
Tower Brass returned to rehearsals in October 2021 and is now under the baton of Lindley’s talented soprano cornet player Richard Jones, who is honoured to follow in Neil’s footsteps. Tower Brass, which has evolved slightly into a community band consisting of both adults and children, was delighted to be asked to play, when the plaque to their founder was unveiled by members of Neil’s family. The band marked the occasion by playing a new composition from the pen of Richard called “Fanfare in Memoriam” and also one of Neil’s favourite pieces “In the Mood”
