The British Bandsman were delighted to be invited to the recital by Matilda Lloyd at the Newbury Corn Exchange where she took part in the Newbury Spring Festival. I always enjoy listening to live performances, it has that extra edge and level of enjoyment, what you hear is a one off and will not be repeated. The playing and accompaniment was of the highest quality, Matilda gave great introduction to the pieces and a short story behind each.
I was interested to see Matilda bring on a Flugelhorn during her performance, as someone with a brass band background this is an instrument that I know well, this showed the outstanding musicianship that Matilda has, a total understanding of the instrument and how to make it speak, the full sound and delightful movement was outstanding and in no way any less than the sound she produces on the trumpet.
When I go to a concert or recital I want to go on a journey, I want to be able relax, sit back and enjoy and this recital gave me all of that and more.
It was good to see the lunchtime recital was well attended and enjoyed, the mix of pieces and instruments kept the audience engaged and the applause showed how much it was appreciated.
I would also like to add a note about the Newbury Spring Festival, a superb event and just a great variety of music to be head, congratulations to the organisers for such a delightful annual event.
