Massed brass band to pay tribute to local bandsman and declare they’re “Brassed Off With Cancer”

On the 16th December 2022 the brass band community of Hertfordshire, and most particularly Ware Brass and Potters Bar Band, sadly lost a stalwart member in Steve Munn, who tragically died from bowel cancer at just fifty-four years old.

Steve, a talented tuba player, along with his wife Sarah and sons Jim and Jonny had been members of these brass bands for a great number of years. In memory of Steve, his family have put together a special concert, not only to celebrate his life but to raise money for Bowel Cancer UK and to increase awareness of this terrible disease.  The “Brassed Off with Cancer” concert will take place on Saturday 29th April at Queenswood School, Brookmans Park, Hertfordshire commencing at 7.00pm.

The concert will be performed by a massed brass band with over 60 players from across the South East and beyond, and in the music featured there will be number of Steve’s personal favourites alongside pieces he performed with his two bands, Ware and Potters Bar. They include showtunes, film music, big band numbers and pop classics including MacArthur Park and John Miles’ Music. In addition to these the concert will feature a world première by leading brass band composer Alan Fernie called Starlings. It is a beautifully reflective piece influenced by starlings’ extraordinary murmuration, and is dedicated to Steve’s memory. This piece will be published by Timbercroft Publishing and a contribution from each sale will be donated to Bowel Cancer UK.

The concert will also feature guest vocal and saxophone soloists, plus an entertaining and well-polished performance from Big Smoke Brass UK. Members of the tuba section will also perform a bass quartet (with band accompaniment) as a tribute to Steve.
